WHAT IS SCRIPT COVERAGE?
The Writers Guild of America (WGA.org) receives over 30 thousand screenplays a year. That means the competition is fierce. When you send your script to a studio, production company, or agency, it will be given to a screenplay reader. Every aspect of your script will go through a rigorous development process called script coverage. Each element of the script will be scrutinized, from "Fade In," to "Fade Out." The studio reader will write a 4-5 page evaluation (a written report) of your screenplay which will include: a logline, synopsis, and comments on the premise, characters, dialogue, plot, and other critical elements of story. The studio reader will comment on what worked or didn’t work. The reader will state if the script is commercially sellable and finally he/she will give the script a ranking of: “recommend,” “consider” or “pass.” You do not want a “pass.”
WHY SHOULD I GET SCRIPT COVERAGE?
You only have ONE chance to impress a producer, agent or manager. Your screenplay is your calling card. It is a sample of your best work. It shows studios, producers, agents and managers that you are a serious writer and not a hobbyist. Yes, you can purchase a book to learn how to format and structure a screenplay, but nothing in a book can prepare you for that one-on-one experience of how well your script will fair in the eyes of the industry screenplay reader. If your script gets a “pass,” you will never get a meeting with a studio executive. Quiet as it is keep, producers, agents and managers all talk about your screenplays.
